Creating online image library application
Multinational insurance group AXA asked Digital Overload to create a tailored online image library that would meet the needs of diverse user groups.
Client aims
AXA is a world leader in financial protection and wealth management, serving over 50 million customers around the world.
An organisation of AXA's size uses thousands of digital images in its external and internal publications, drawn from many different sources and managed by many different staff. The aim of this project was to develop an online image library that would allow AXA to manage and maintain all their image resources in one place.
We were initially asked to extend the third-party application that AXA were using. However, having reviewed the requirement, we agreed that an all-new, custom-built solution would meet the client's specific requirements more effectively.
Our approach
Before development, we reviewed the existing system to identify which features were redundant and which should be kept. We also created a planning document covering all the new requirements.
The solution needed to support a range of user types, functions and permission levels. Administrators would upload media libraries, other users would submit purchased images and different departments would be granted access to different image categories.
Other features include image compression and resizing, licence management, slide shows and monitoring of inappropriate activity. The system also allows users to create individual accounts, leave comments on images and create their own 'lightboxes' (custom image sets).
Once development was complete, we worked closely with AXA's internal technical development team to prepare the server for the new system to go live.
Results
The end result was a stable, flexible and easily maintainable solution that allows AXA staff to store and reference images quickly and easily from a single central location.
The image gallery reduced the time and cost required for marketing managers and creative teams to source media. It also helped marketing administrators to keep track of image-licensing information, ensuring that all licences are renewed and kept up to date.
