SEO Rank Progress - Part 3

Quick update….the importance of removing unnecessary keywords from the page title became even more evident to us as we changed our home page title from “Welcome to Digital Overload - a digital agency” to just “Digital Overload - a digital agency”, this took us from page 11 to page 7 for the search term “digital agency”. The “Welcome to” didn’t seem to serve any particular purpose other than to increase the length of the page title and the time taken for someone to digest the meaning of the title (ok, that’s extreme in most cases, but screenreader users I’m sure will appreciate it’s removal).

Effectively you’ve increased the keyword density of your title tag, making it seem more “on-topic” to SEs.

Now if you were to tweak the word order, changing the tag to, for example “Digital Agency - Digital Overload” then you should see another significant boost in the SERPs. SEs have always appeared to like to see the important words near the front of the various tags.

I’d taken that in to consideration and though I appreciate the potential SERP improvement that could generate I think that it’s putting SEO ahead of usability. As it’s the homepage I think it’s important to have the company name first - I also think that it’s visually nicer to see the company name first in the search results, just helps when scanning down the page.
